CUSTOMERS BEWARE!!! I was in an extremely difficult and urgent situation over the weekend into Tuesday. My heat was barely functioning, but it was operating with constant monitoring and babysitting to ensure my wife and child could remain warm. During this time, I identified that the furnace gas valve needed replacement. This specific unit is known to have faulty gas valves, which are difficult to source, but I was able to locate one locally. I contacted Choice Heating and Cooling to install the valve I had already obtained. Although I found the labor charge of $540 for approximately 30 minutes of work to be excessive, I agreed to it for the sake of restoring reliable heat. Heat is not something to take lightly, and I was willing to pay for peace of mind. Unfortunately, the experience deteriorated from there. Despite the furnace being only two years old, the technician insisted that additional components required immediate repair in order for the unit to operate. He showed me a burner and claimed it was too dirty to function safely. I could not understand how dirty burners alone would prevent operation, especially given that the system had been producing heat prior to his visit. When I asked whether the burners could simply be cleaned and reinstalled, he stated that cleaning them could damage the rest of the system. At that point, I had already paid in full for the service. Most concerning, the technician left the property with the furnace completely shut down. Prior to his visit, the system, while unreliable, was still producing heat with careful monitoring. After he left, we had no heat at all, leaving my family without heat on one of the coldest nights of the season. In addition to the technical concerns, the overall professionalism was disappointing. The technician appeared unkempt, smelled strongly of cigarettes, and arrived in a van that was visibly rusty and in poor condition. While appearance alone is not everything, it did not inspire confidence given the seriousness of the situation and the cost of the service. Later that night, I made an emergency call to a second company. They informed me that cleaning burners is a common and appropriate first step, especially for a unit of this age. I agreed to their service at a cost of $200, which felt very reasonable under the circumstances. That technician had the furnace operating again in approximately five minutes. The second technician explained that it was both unprofessional and unnecessary for Choice Heating and Cooling not to even attempt cleaning the burners. He confirmed that, given the age of the unit, the burners only required a quick brushing. Based on this experience, I would not recommend Choice Heating and Cooling, especially for families dealing with urgent heating issues.
